DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL ONCOLOGY AND HEMATOLOGY „A"
LYMPHOMA CENTER

dr. SCHNEIDER TAMÁS JÓZSEF

Head Physician, Head of Department

INTRODUCTION – PATIENT CARE PROFILE

The primary focus of our department is the diagnosis and treatment of malignant lymphoproliferative disorders. Our patient turnover has significantly increased in the last 20 years. While we treated 80-90 new lymphoma patients in a year in 1996, we are close to 300 new patients annually in recent years. Currently we follow and care for ~4000 patients.
The protocols used for diagnosing and treating this group of disease were developed by our professionals and are aligned with international standards. Our department mainly covers Budapest and its surroundings, but being a national institute, we admit patients from the whole country. The treatment of our patients is carried out at our inpatient department equipped with 23 beds, and mostly, if medical and other aspects indicate it, at the Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit of the Institute.
We routinely follow our patients after active treatment, according to our follow-up protocol, which was designed based on international standards. We also provide clinical psychology assistance to our patients in any phase of the disease.
According to the certification of the Hematology Chamber, our Department is a hematology center that possesses both the human resources and equipment for the application of aggressive hemato-oncological treatments (except acute leukaemias), and where professional and effective supportive care is available at a high level as well.
Our nursing team is well prepared and trained for our special tasks.
Our treatment efficiency is almost the same as in the most developed countries; our treatment methods and principles are the same.

SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

The physicians at our department also conduct clinical research in their special fields of interest.
We regularly verify the efficiency of our activities, we present these data at relevant conferences, and we publish them in scientific papers. During our clinical examinations we predominantly compare our treatment results with international data, thereby providing ourselves quality control.
We also maintain a close collaboration with the research departments of the National Institute of Oncology, and the research units of Semmelweis University.
Selected clinical research topics of the department:
- Treatment possibilities and results of Hodgkin disease in elderly patients
- Monoclonal antibody treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma
- Role of antibodies in the treatment of follicular non-Hodgkin lymphomas
- Treatment strategies of primary central nervous system lymphomas
- Frequency and clinical characteristics of "second" tumors following cured lymphomas
- Clinical characteristics and treatment strategies of primary mediastinal non-Hodgkin lymphomas
- The role and economy assessment of onco-psychiatry in the treatment of malignant lymphomas
- Testing special biomarkers in Hodgkin lymphoma
The physicians of the department have published numerous papers in recent years, in international and Hungarian journals as well; we also had several conference talks and posters at domestic and international conferences.
We participate in the graduate medical education in Hungarian and German . Our deparment is accreditated for the internal medicine, clinical hematology and clinical oncology specialist training.

PATIENTS’ ADMISSION, APPOINTMENTS

To schedule an appointment in advance is needed. The examination of patients is preferrably carried out ambulantory if it is possible. Inpatient admission can be performed just based on prior consultation with one of our specialists.

THE HISTORY OF THE DEPARTEMENT

The Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the National Institute of Oncology was established nearly 40 years ago and currently treats the greatest number of lymphoma patients in the country.
At the outset, it used to operate as a specialized unit of the chemotherapy department. The Institute's former Director General, Prof. Sándor Eckhardt, had launched its development into a separate department as part of a government initiative focusing on developing malignant lymphoma therapies. Since its inception, the department was led by Dr. Tamás Fleischmann up until his death in 1997. Dr. Fleischmann made significant contributions to this field by pioneering Hungarian malignant lymphoma research and introducing modern lymphoma therapies. His research focused on the cytogenetic description of the various types of lymphomas. Another merit of Professor Fleischmann is that he "brought up" a well-trained, specialized team of physicians who are experts of this particular domain and still work at the department as head physicians today.
After the death of Dr. Fleischmann, Dr. András Rosta was appointed Department Head. Before joining the National Institute of Oncology, he was the Head of Department of Medical Oncology at Semmelweis University Teaching Hospital. Under his leadership the international relations of the department were broaden, opportunities opened to participate in national and international clinical trials.
