A complete range of urological surgeries are performed at the Unit.
a./ Extensive surgeries are routinely performed either with or without the removal of lymph node. In the case of kidney cancer the kidney is removed through a lateral or abdominal incision. If needed a vascular surgeon can be involved to perform the removal of tumour thrombus that invades the main vein; the procedure requires special proficiency. We strive for organ-sparing surgery following the latest principles and if the stage of the tumour makes it possible.
b./ In the case of urothelial carcinoma (malignant bladder cancer) transurethral resection or hemi cystectomy surgery (removal of a significant part of the bladder) is performed. It is necessary to remove the bladder completely in the case of advanced stage. In such case an artificial bladder is formed from a portion of the intestine as a urinary reservoir which is surgically created in order to ensure the best possible quality of life. In men it is necessary to remove the prostate and seminal vesicles and in women to remove all of the structures in the pelvic area (removal of bladder, uterus, ovary, lymph nodes).
c./ In the case of prostate cancer a comprehensive care is provided at the Institute uniquely in the country (in cooperation with the radio -and oncotherapy departments).
Patients are admitted from all over the country for the complete removal of prostate gland, seminal vesicle and lymph node surgery. If the patient is not suitable for this surgery for some reason they will receive an onco-radiological treatment.
d./ On patients with testicular cancer the removal of lymph nodes surrounded by large blood vessels is performed after orchiectomy (removal of one or both testicles) both before and after onco-radiological treatment.
e./ Reconstructive plastic surgeries: closure of renal pelvis, ureter and vesicovaginal fistula.
f./ Urinary incontinence surgeries: stress, urge both in women and men.
g./ Comprehensive kidney stone treatment is performed. It is possible to receive ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) treatment after an appointment is made. We have the instruments to perform all types of endoscopic intervention thus PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) and ureteroscopic removal of stones (semirigid and flexible URS) are also performed using LASER if necessary.
h./ Laparoscopic surgical technology is on an advanced level at our unit and we are ready to use Da Vinci robotic surgical system as well.
