Structure of the Psycho-oncology Team of the National Institute of Oncology

 The Psycho-oncology Team exists as an individual unit and belongs to the Rehabilitation Department within the National Institute of Oncology (Budapest). The team consists of 8 psychologists, each whom also belong to and work together with the team of an Inpatient Unit within the Institute. Outpatient care is also essential part of the team’s work, we support our patients through individual counselling sessions and psychotherapy as well as psychoeducative and therapeutic groups. The Psycho-oncology Team is also involved in scientific research and training professionals.

Our number one priority is the everyday psychological attendance of our patients fighting serious and chronic illnesses. Besides our daily work with our patients and the medical team we are committed to taking part in scientific research and education.

Education

Internship positions for university students (each semester)

The psycho-oncology team collaborates with 4 different Hungarian universities and provides a number of internship positions for students of Psychology each semester. Each member of the team takes part in educating and supervising the students throughout their stay.

In May 2016 and 2018 our team held a 4-day Complex Psycho-oncology Training together with Workshops in Cluj Napoca and Târgu Secuiesc for healthcare professionals working in the field of oncology in Romania.

 

Conferences

 

Members of the team regularly attend and deliver presentations at the relevant national and international conferences in the field of psychooncology, psychotherapy and oncology, as well as participating in-, or carrying out the organisation of individual conferences in the field of psycho-oncology.

Lacsán Katalin

Clinical psychologist, Psychoterapist in training

 

I completed my basic psychological studies at the Szeged Institute of Psychology of the University of Szeged, then I continued at the Institute of Psychology of the University of Pécs, where I obtained my degree in adult clinical and mental hygiene. I am currently under training to become a psychotherapist at TEPKI. From 2009, I dealt with addiction patients in the framework of rehabilitation and outpatient care, in connection with which I became acquainted with couple and family therapy.

I have been working as a psychologist at the National Institute of Oncology since 2014. My tasks include assessing the condition, crisis intervention and psychological support of patients in the Department of Internal Medicine A and C of the Pharmacotherapy Center. As part of the mobile Palliative Team, I consider it important to help with psychological difficulties related to non-curative treatments and end of life, and to support both patients and relatives.

Esperger Zsófia

Clinical psychologist


I graduated in 2019 as an adult clinical psychologist. During my four years of training as a professional psychologist, I gained experience in adult psychiatric care. I have been a member of the Oncopsychology Working Group of the National Institute of Oncology since 2020. I primarily provide psychological care to patients treated in breast and soft tissue cancer surgery and abdominal cancer surgery departments. The care includes psychological preparation for surgical interventions in individual or group form, psychoeducation, resolution of crisis situations, support for individual coping with psychotraumas and stressors, psychodiagnostics, proposing the need for psychiatric care, referral to a specialist. The above services are available in both inpatient and outpatient care before and / or after surgery.

Patyi Dániel

Clinical psychologist

 

In 2014, I graduated from the Pázmány Péter Catholic University with a degree in Clinical and Health Psychology. I graduated as an adult Clinical and Mental Hygiene Specialist Psychologist in 2019. I have been working in the Institute’s Psychooncology Team since the summer of 2020. I mostly deal with the patients of the Department of Intensive Care, Radiation Therapy and the Lung Transplantation program.

Kővári Réka Luca

Clinical psychologist in training

 

In 2020, I graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pécs with a degree in Clinical and Health Psychology. In the fall of 2021, I started my Adult Clinical and Mental Hygiene Specalist Psychologist training, in which I am currently participating. Since 2017, I have been volunteering in the camps organized by the Brave Camp for chronically ill children and their families, where I got acquainted with the method of therapeutic recreation. Since the autumn of 2020, I have been providing assistance in a psychodynamically oriented approach at the Department of Gynecological Tumor Surgery and Oncology of the National Institute of Oncology and at the Department of Abdominal Tumor Surgery. At the Hungarian Relaxation and Symbol Therapy Association, I mastered the Autogenetic Training technique as a method-specific training, which I also use in my work.

I graduated as a psychologist at the University of Pécs in 2017, after which I gained experience in the field of psychiatry, cardiology and oncology. I became a clinical psychologist in 2021. I have been working at the National Institute of Oncology since September 2021, primarily providing psychological support to inpatients and outpatients of the Department of Internal Medicine.

Barcs Gábor

psychologist

I graduated from the Faculty of Humanities of the Károli Gáspár University with a degree in Clinical and Health Psychology in 2018. In my thesis for the master’s degree I carried out an impact analysis of a relaxation and imagery technique developed for cancer patients. From September 2021, I worked as a psychologist at the Szent Borbála Hospital, in the Department of Oncology. Since May 2022, I have been a member of the Oncopsyhology Working Group of the National Institute of Oncology. I provide psychological care to patients treated in the Department of Radiation Therapy and the Lung Transplantation program.
