Among all tumor types, colorectal cancer is the second most common in Hungary, while pancreatic cancer is the second most common cancer of the digestive tract.

There are more than 20.000 gastrointestinal tumors diagnosed in Hungary every year, and the cumulative cancer related mortality is the second worst in Europe. This can be related to insufficient or poorly attended screening programs, environmental causes, un-healthy lifestyle and genetic factors.

Our duty in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, is to provide state of the art, multi-disciplinary, high quality and safe surgical care for our patients.

The Visceral Surgical Unit of the National Institute of Oncology is one of the main gastrointestinal tumor centers in the country.

The unit performs more than 800 procedures annually, more than half of which are minimally invasive laparoscopic operations. Furthermore, we provide inpatient backup for approximately 300 invasive gastroenterology and radiology procedures every year.

Thanks to rapid technological advances, minimally invasive surgery of gastrointestinal tumors has become a daily routine. This routine however requires a highly trained and skilled onco-surgical team, with expertise in minimally invasive techniques.

Although minimally invasive techniques do not increase cancer survival on their own, they put far less burden on the patient, and present a lower surgical risk.

The Visceral Unit provides surgical care in the following cases:
Oesophago-gastric cancers
Colorectal cancer
Hepato-pancreato-biliary tumors
Abdominal and retroperitoneal sarcomas
Adrenal tumors
Stomas

The Visceral Surgical Unit is located on the 5th floor in the 3rd block of the Center of Surgical Oncology.
Our patients receive a caring and high-quality surgical service in two and four bed rooms with separate bathrooms and a scenic view on the city.
Our department has 5 specialist surgeons, 1 fellow, 1 stoma-care specialist, 11 surgical nurses and 2 secretaries.

Our surgical team has expertise in the treatment of the most complex oncological cases of the entire alimentary tract. This knowledge and routine has been gained through long years of training at home and abroad.
We regularly present our results and innovations in peer-reviewed journals, national- and international scientific conferences.

We are proud to put great emphasis on the complete medical and psychological rehabilitation of our patients, which is made possible by an outstanding team of nurses, stoma-therapists, dietitians, physiotherapists and psychologists.

Our outpatient clinics are available every day between 8:00 and 15:00 with an appointment booked in advance.

You can arrange an appointment by phone: +36-1-224-8600 ext. 2600
